Plan the complete coating system

A practical sequence from substrate assessment to the approved finish sample.

Published 4 October 2026

When to use this

For a new facade or refurbishment brief, before ordering separate coating layers.

Key points

  • Identify the substrate and its condition.
  • Confirm preparation, compatible primer and finish together.
  • Approve the colour and texture on a physical sample.

Define the starting surface

Record whether the work is interior or exterior, the substrate, its present condition, the area and exposure conditions. Include existing coatings when planning refurbishment.

Confirm the layer sequence

The manual’s sequence is substrate assessment, preparation and levelling, compatible primer, then the finish. Add a protective topcoat only where the selected system requires it.

Make the sample part of selection

Screen colour and texture images are indicative. Confirm the appearance with a physical sample and agree the substrate and application method for the project.

Keep the application information product-specific

Use the product’s own temperature, humidity, coat count and recoat information. Do not transfer one product’s coverage or timing to every layer in the system.
